Shamrock Rovers earned just their fourth league win of the season tonight but it has come at a vital time and Rovers have closed the gap on Finn Harps to just two points in the relegation battle.
It was never going to be easy for Rovers tonight as Drogheda United were the visitors to Dalymount Park.
Pat McCourt had an early effort saved by Drogheda keeper Dan Connor while at the other end Barry Murphy saved at the second attempt from Mark Leech's shot. Both sides carved out chances before the break but Trevor Molloy came closest to breaking the deadlock.
His shot on the stroke of half-time hit the angle of post and crossbar and somehow managed to rebound to safety.
A good move involving a number of players saw Molloy play in David Mooney just three minutes into the second half and he slotted home to put Rovers ahead.
Declan O'Brien came close to an equaliser for the Drogs but there was to be no further goals as Rovers ran out winners.

Shamrock Rovers : Murphy, Gavin, McGuinness, Doyle, Gough, McDonagh (Caffrey 74), McDonnell, Rutherford, McCourt (Manley 87), Mooney, Molloy.
