Former Athlone Town cult hero Rod de Khors returns to town on Friday for the official launch of his new book 'Who Needs Cantona...We've Got Rod de Khors'.
Written by the Westmeath Independent's soccer correspondent Kevin O'Neill, the book will be launched at a function in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel after the match against Monaghan United (10 pm).
De Khors, always held in high esteem among Town supporters, will be there, while several other former players including Mickey O'Connor, Conor Frawley, Frank Darby, Val Keenan, Shane Curran and Barry Murphy are all expected to attend.
Rod had three stints with Athlone Town during the nineties and also played for Bohemians, Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda Utd, as well as a spell in England.
Speaking about Friday night's eagerly awaited event, Rod has this to say: "It should be a great night and hopefully lots of Athlone Town fans will turn up. It gives me a chance to meet up with plenty of the old players, supporters and those attached to the club. I always had an exceptional relationship with Athlone supporters and they were really great to me. Hopefully those who buy the book will enjoy the read.
"It's totally honest and I tried to give people an insight into what it's like to be a League of Ireland player. I think soccer fans will enjoy it. Anyone who is interested in the book should come along and I think they will enjoy the night."
The book will cost just €10 and will be available in various local outlets in the very near future. It will also be available to purchase in the Athlone Town FC club shop from the 9 September.
De Khors added: "Anyone who knew me knew I wore my heart on my sleeve as a player and always gave everything. I loved it with Athlone Town and always enjoy my visits back here. I was surprised when Kevin approached me initially about writing a book about my life and career. But I was honoured to do it and it's something I am proud of. Hopefully people will like it and enjoy the read."
