Dublin City have won promotion to the premier division of the eircom League at the expense of Shamrock Rovers. Rovers suffered their first ever relegation as tonight's promotion/relegation play-off second finished 1-1, leaving the scoring 3-2 on aggregate in Dublin City's favour.
Rovers went into the game knowing they had to improve greatly from Tuesday' first leg loss and the Hoops did well in the first half after a couple of good early Dublin City chances. Trevor Vaughan had an early effort while Robbie Collins headed wide minutes later.
Rovers then took control of the half and Trevor Molloy shot past the post. Cathal O'Connor had a shot blocked for a corner by David McGill in one of many corners collected by the away side.
Gavin McDonnell put the ball over after a dangerous cross as half-time approached.
The Vikings seemed to take a massive step towards promotion just ten minutes into the second half as Robbie Collins put them 1-0 up on the night. An error by Mark Rutherford gifted Dublin possession and Vaughan picked out Collins who turned home.
Rovers were in trouble but an almost instant reply from Derek Treacy meant the game was back to where it started tonight, Rovers trailing by one goal on aggregate. Rutherford got down the wing and played in a dangerous cross for Tony Sheridan and although he mis-kicked, Treacy fired the ball home to make it 1-1.
Kieran Foley was denied by City keeper Brendan Kennedy as the Rovers man attempted to chip the ball over him. Rovers' challenge though was faltering and a couple of late chances were spurned while four minutes of injury time produced little.
The final whistle signalled a return to the top flight at the first attempt for Dublin City but Rovers are now consigned to first division football, their first ever relegation.
