Michael Gault 34
Peter Thompson 53
Linfield became the first team from the Irish League to secure a win in this season's Setanta Sports Cup and in the process move top of Group B. Linfield easily saw off a poor Shelbourne side, winning 2-0 to leave Shels two points behind both Linfield and Derry in third place.
Shels had their chances to go ahead but it was to be the story of their night as Linfield took control and were unlucky not to go ahead earlier. Dean Delaney had a lucky escape in the Shels goal although that luck would run out later.
In difficult conditions, Michael Gault fired Linfield ahead after 34 minutes as Tim Mouncey's initial shot bounced around in the box.
Peter Thompson, having just recently signed professional terms with Linfield, made it 2-0 on 53 minutes. There was more than a hint of controversy about it though as Delaney was challenged by Mouncey and lost control of the ball in the air. More often than not a foul would result but not this time, and Thompson slotted home. Delaney couldn't continue with Steve Williams taking over between the posts.
Shels came close to a consolation late on but both Liam Kearney and Bobby Ryan failed to convert.
