Derry City dropped points at the Brandywell for the first time this season as they played out a 0-0 draw with UCD, the second time the sides have produced a scoreless draw this season. Stephen O'Flynn had the perfect chance to put the Candystripes ahead but ultimately they failed in their bid to return to the top of the eircom League.
Darren Kelly forced a good save from UCD goalkeeper Darren Quigley with the College keeper touching the ball around the post after half an hour.
There was little other action of note in a below par first half but Derry looked to be on their way to opening the scoring just after the break. Pat McCourt returned to the Derry team tonight and a foul on him by Connor Kenna gave Derry a 47th minute penalty. However, UCD keeper Quigley saved the resulting spot kick from O'Flynn, who had only been introduced into the game at the resumption for the second half.
O'Flynn went close to making amends later in the game but Quigley was again equal to it as the striker got on the end of Kevin Deery's cross into the box. Sean Hargan went close in the closing 20 minutes but his shot just drifted wide of Quigley's goal.
Derry now trail Shelbourne by one point but do still have one game in hand on the Dublin side.
