eircom League of Ireland Premier Division

Shamrock Rovers 0

Belfield Park

Both sides had good chances to win the game, but ultimately UCD and Shamrock Rovers had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Belfield Park on Friday night - Rovers' first game back in the top flight.

Despite UCD holding plenty of possession, Andy Myler and Dave Cassidy forced good saves from College keeper Darren Quigley as Rovers threatened to break the deadlock.

In a chaotic goal-mouth scramble minutes before half-time, Rovers looked to have taken the lead but Stephen Maher's effort was ruled out for offside.

Alan Mahon's free kick midway through the second period had Rovers keeper Barry Murphy worried but he failed to hit the target. Paul Byrne went closer still as his header came back off the bar in the closing ten minutes.

Both sides will probably take a draw given the nature of the game and the added factor of Rovers' return to the Premier Division.
