Dundalk are the only team with a perfect record in the First Division of the eircom League of Ireland but they were made to work for a win over Kilkenny City at Buckley Park on Friday.
As a less than inspiring first period drifted toward the break, Kilkenny stunned their visitors when Padraig Fogarthy blasted home a long range drive to break the deadlock.
It may have been the best thing to happen to Dundalk as manager John Gill rang the changes for the second period. Substitutes Anthony Flood and Christy Doran combined for the equaliser on 63 minutes. Doran got in to drill home Flood's long cross.
The match was in Dundalk's favour on 68 minutes when Shaun Williams long range shot evaded the grasp of goalkeeper John McGuinness to make it 2-1 to the promotion favourites.
It was enough for Dundalk and leaves them top of the second tier.
