Portadown's abysmal record in the All Ireland Setanta Sports Cup hit a new low tonight as Cork City visited Shamrock Park. Not only did Damien Richardson's side hand Portadown their seventh defeat in fourteen Setanta games, but Cork ran out 7-0 winners - ending Portadown's slim hopes of qualification for the last four.
Roy O'Donovan scored three of the seven goals as Cork racked up their eleventh goal against Portadown in a week.
Denis Behan opened the scoring in the 15th minute before John O'Flynn fired across goal to the net after 18 minutes. Behan's goal set the tone for the night after pouncing on a defensive mishap from the home side.
Joe Gamble made it 3-0 on 32 minutes after O'Flynn played him through. O'Donovan got in with his first of the night to wrap up the win before half-time. O'Donovan lashed home a drive after Darragh Ryan had played him in.
O'Donovan cold have had more but got his second of the night on 66 minutes after more defensive slips from the home side. Behan netted his second of the night eight minutes from the end to make it 6-0.
All that was left was for O'Donovan and Cork to create history on 87 minutes. The 7-0 win is the biggest in the three year history of the competition with O'Donovan hitting the first hat-trick in the competition.
