Dundalk extended their winning start to the season to four games tonight and ended Athlone Town's unbeaten start in emphatic fashion at Oriel Park tonight. Dundalk ran out 6-2 winners with six different scorers netting for the home side.

Both sides finished the game with ten men after Ian Rossiter and Dave Crawley were sent off in the closing 15 minutes.

A foul on Paul McTiernan after only eleven minutes gave Athlone a penalty which Rossiter slotted home to open the scoring.

Shaun Williams' deflected shot made it 1-1 five minutes later. John Flanagan put Dundalk ahead on 36 minutes after a corner from Crawley. Anthony Flood scored against one of his former clubs to make it 3-1 in first half stoppage time with a long range chip.

Another Crawley corner brought the killer fourth goal inside the first minute of the second half, Robbie Dunne heading home.

Phillip Hughes made it 5-1 on 74 minutes to make it a rout before the double sending off on 76 minutes. Even Stevie Gavin's 86th minute goal couldn't restore some pride for Athlone as Cathal O'Connor made it 6-2 right at the end.
