Shamrock Rovers advanced to the second round of the eircom League of Ireland Cup early on Monday evening with a 1-0 win over Dundalk at Tolka Park. Wayne Colbert's goal on the hour proved decisive.

Rovers had the better of the early going and Eric McGill forced a save with his free kick before Colbert flicked the ball wide from a good position.

Dundalk, unbeaten in five league games, were struggling and eventually fell behind on the hour. Colbert got in on the end of Jamie Duffy's low cross to flick the ball past Niall Gallagher.

Paul Marney had a goal ruled out as Dundalk battled back. Cathal O'Connor also went close but Rovers might well have wrapped up the win before the final whistle. Colbert had shouts for a penalty and Dave O'Connor hammered a shot against the bar.
