Drogheda United moved level on points with Saint Patrick's Athletic at the top of the eircom League Premier Division on Friday night following a 3-0 win over Sligo Rovers at United Park.

Eamon Zayed and Declan O'Brien hit the Drogs three goals inside the opening half hour. Before Sligo's visit, Drogheda had not won a game all season by more than one goal.

Zayed hit a sweet half-volley to put Drogheda ahead after just eight minutes. O'Brien chested down Shane Robinson's cross and the former Bray striker fired home.

Sligo stayed in the contest and threatened on a number of occasions but Drogheda scored twice more before the half hour to kill off the game. O'Brien was again the provider, taking advantage of some generous Sligo defending to feed Zayed, who finished superbly inside the area on 24 minutes.

O'Brien netted in the 27th minute after getting in on the end of Simon Webb's long ball forward before finishing well past Richard Brush.

Zayed could have completed his hat-trick shortly after the break while Jason McCartney headed against the angle of post and crossbar for Sligo.

In truth, Drogheda could have won by a larger margin and another goal would have left them top of the league before Saturday began.
