Waterford United 0
Derry City 1
Peter Hutton 75
Derry City picked up a much needed win but were made to work all the way in Waterford on Friday night. Peter Hutton scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from the end to beat the Blues.
Derry had started poorly against a lively Waterford side and the Blues will be extremely disappointed to have picked up nothing from the game.
The home side had long periods on top in the first period. Paul McCarthy narrowly missed the target in the opening ten minutes while Vinny Sullivan headed straight at goalkeeper Pat Jennings from a good position.
Sullivan and Alan Reynolds both tested the Derry goal from distance either side of the half hour. Sullivan forced a save while Reynolds grazed the frame of the goal.
Derry almost hit the front just after the hour when Kevin McHugh's long range lob almost caught out goalkeeper Dean Delaney. However, the keeper got back to flick over his crossbar just in time.
The deadlock was finally broken on 75 minutes. Ruaidhri Higgins sent in a good cross and after the home defence failed to clear, Hutton nipped in to score what proved to be the only goal of the game.
The win lifts Derry up to sixth, ahead of Sligo on goal-difference.
