Having gone into Friday night's game with just goal-difference separating them, there was little between Cork City and Shamrock Rovers with their eircom League Premier Division game finishing scoreless.
Both sides had chances but home side Cork applied more of the pressure in the closing period of the game forcing heroics out of the Rovers defence and in particular goalkeeper Barry Murphy.
Rovers' Ger Rowe forced a save from goalkeeper Michael Devine in the early going and shortly after half-time saw his shot evade the keeper but land on the roof of the net.
Murphy had saved from Liam Kearney just before half-time while intense Cork pressure kept Rovers encamped in their own half for the dying minutes.
Substitute Denis Behan went close a couple of times. He first forced a brave low save from Murphy before his header at goal brought a goal-line clearance from Ger O'Brien.
