Athlone Town lost for the first time at their new stadium tonight when Kildare County ran out 2-0 winners. Padraig Amond scored twice for the second game running to give Kildare their first win of the season to move off the bottom of the First Division to sixth.

Amond finished from close range to open the scoring after 27 minutes as Athlone failed to clear Philip Gorman's shot. Colm Heffernan went close but in a game of few goal efforts, Athlone were struggling to get back in the game.

Paul McTiernan had a goal ruled out for offside before Amond struck again on 68 minutes to put the game beyond the Midlanders. Pouncing on a defensive mistake, Amond flicked the ball past Athlone keeper Danny O'Leary.

After going unbeaten in their first three league games, Athlone have now lost their last three.
