Dundalk extended their lead at the top of the eircom League of Ireland First Division to five points tonight and inflicted a first league defeat on Limerick 37. Paul Marney scored the only goal to put Dundalk back on the winning track.
Chris Doran went close to giving Dundalk the perfect start but missed the target from inside the box. Cathal O'Connor looked set to do some damage as he broke through the home defence but lost his footing at the crucial moment.
Joey Maloney forced a good save from Dundalk keeper Chris Bennion as Limerick began to take a foothold in the game.
Marney struck the only goal of the game for Dundalk on the half hour as he tapped home from John Flanagan's low cross.
Dundalk could have gone 2-0 up moments later but Flanagan's long range free kick rebounded off the crossbar to eventual safety.
Limerick keeper Jimmy Fyffe did well and more than once pulled off a string of saves to deny Dundalk. Despite being second best for much of the second half, Limerick had a couple of penalty appeals waved away before Dundalk scrambled away a shot from Ross Cosgrave.
Bennion was alert to deny the onrushing Dave Goldbey in the final minute. At the other end, Fyffe saved from both Anto Flood and Shaun Williams as time ran out.
