Monaghan United slipped to their second league defeat of the season on Friday night as Athlone Town scored twice in the closing fifteen minutes to climb fourth in the First Division of the League of Ireland.
Eric Lavine and Paul McTiernan hit the goals which broke down Monaghan's resistance. A goal-less first half saw McTiernan bring the best out of Monaghan keeper Alvin Rouse twice.
Lavine finally broke the deadlock on 77 minutes as he got in on the end of Stevie Gavin's cross to turn the ball home.
McTiernan finally got himself on the score-sheet in the final minute to confirm a win for the visitors.
