Dundalk extended their lead at the top of the League of Ireland First Division to seven points tonight after a convincing 4-0 win over Wexford Youths at Oriel Park.
Despite dominating in the first half, division leaders Dundalk had to wait until after the hour to break the deadlock and when they did the floodgates opened.
Phillip Hughes struck the Wexford post in the first half while Shaun Williams wasted a couple of good chances. Luckily for the visitors goalkeeper Shane Dunphy was on form too to thwart a number of Dundalk attacks.
Dundalk finally made the breakthrough on 66 minutes when John Flanagan headed in from Dave Crawley's corner kick. Dundalk would add two more before the 75th minute.
Anthony Flood headed in Dundalk's second on 71 minutes after connecting inside the Wexford box. Paul Malone turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-0 on 74 minutes.
Hughes added a fourth in the closing minutes of the game from close rang, the fourth goal of the season for last year's top scorer.
