Ross Cosgrave pounced on a defensive blunder from Monaghan United to score the only goal as Limerick 37 climbed back up to second in the First Division of the eircom League of Ireland on Friday night.
Limerick had been on top for much of the game but had a lucky escape in the first period when Brian Buckley blocked as Finbar Heffernan got set to pull the trigger.
Prior to that, Limerick had created chances notably when Kevin Waters saw his chip cleared off the line by Kevin Williamson.
The only goal arrived four minutes into the second half when Cosgrave intercepted an attempted clearance from Alvin Rouse, despatching the ball back over the head of the Monaghan keeper to make it 1-0.
Padraig Moran could only fire straight at Rouse as Limerick should have extended their lead shortly after.
Monaghan were competitive until the end but their cause wasn't helped by the sending off of Thomas Heffernan in the 89th minute after a foul on Waters.
