Conor Sammon slotted home an eighth minute penalty to give UCD a 1-0 win over Saint Patrick's Athletic in the second round of the eircom League Cup. Although the League Cup ranks as one of the least significant competitions in Irish senior football the defeat means the Saints have now lost three of their last four games after being unbeaten to that point.

Sammon broke into the Saints box only to be brought down by Colm Foley. The decision meaning that Pats have now had a penalty awarded against them in five of their last six games.

Sammon slotted the kick past Brendan Clarke to make it 1-0. Either side of the goal Bogdan Oprea might have also scored with a couple of good chances.

The Saints steadied themselves as the half wore on but failed to really trouble Darren Quigley in the UCD goal.

Keith Fahey missed the target shortly after half-time after taking the ball past Quigley. Having taken the ball at an acute angle, he failed to hit the net. The Saints had plenty of possession as full-time loomed but failed to capitalize on it, and have now exited the League Cup in their first game.
