Athlone Town claimed their place in the last eight of the eircom League Cup on Tuesday night with a penalty shoot out win over Kilkenny City in Lissywoollen.

Joey Watson had put Kilkenny ahead midway through the first half but Carmine Russo levelled for the home side just after the hour - just minutes after arriving as a substitute.

Watson had put Kilkenny ahead after a mistake in the Athlone back line but Athlone fought back thanks to Russo's long range drive.

With no further scoring, Athlone won the shoot-out 4-3 with Davy Byrne grabbing the decisive kick.
