Waterford United climbed off the bottom of the eircom League of Ireland Premier Division on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Galway United at the RSC. Vinny Sullivan scored the only goal when the two sides last met in the league, back at the end of 2002, and the same player hit the winner on Friday to halt Galway's recent revival.
Both sides had chances in the early going when Sullivan had an early chance blocked and Galway's John Lester narrowly missed the target from long range.
Shane Harte failed to find the net from a good position after Galway keeper Gary Rogers had been taken out of the equation after a coming together with Paul McCarthy. Barry Moran lost out in a one on one with Waterford keeper Dean Delaney.
Sullivan spun and drilled home a powerful shot just after the hour to ultimately decide the game. Sullivan got in after David Breen flicked on Harte's throw in.
As Galway went looking for an equaliser, Moran fired wide after doing the hard part of getting past Delaney.
