Dundalk extended their lead at the top of the First Division of the League of Ireland tonight with a 3-2 win over Kilkenny City at Oriel Park. Despite leading 3-0 with thirty minutes to go, Dundalk had to hodl on somewhat near the end.

John Flanagan headed the home side in front from a Dave Crawley corner kick after only eight minutes. Dundalk were dominant but missed a couple of good chances before they did eventually double their lead.

Cathal O'Connor made it 2-0 on 42 minutes as he turned the ball home from close range as he connected with a Paul Smyth cross.

Dundalk could easily have wrapped up the win before half-time but they did go 3-0 up just six minutes after half-time as Shaun Williams netted his fifth of the season. Williams volleyed home to seemingly wrap up all three points with plenty of time to spare.

Ted O'Connor headed in from Joe Watson's cross to get a goal back for Kilkenny on 61 minutes. Kilkenny's O'Connor fired home his second with a low driven shot on 68 minutes to cut the gap back to just one goal.

Kilkenny couldn't grab the third goal to level meaning Dundalk extend their lead at the top to five points.
