Kildare County climbed up to fourth in the First Division of the eircom League with a 3-1 win on their visit to Monaghan United on Friday night. Like most of Friday night's games, the game was played under difficult wet and windy conditions with Kildare eventually pulling away to secure their third league win of the season.

Sean L'Estrange put Kildare ahead after 24 minutes when he forced the ball home after Barry Clancy's corner kick had led to chaos in the Monaghan area.

Phillip Gorman fired Kildare two in front on the half hour to seemingly inflict another defeat on struggling Monaghan.

Finbar Heffernan volleyed Monaghan back into contention with a superb 37th minute finish.

Monaghan came close to levelling in the second period but just couldn't find a way through. Eventually Ger Robinson made it 3-1 for Kildare on 83 minutes after a quick upfield break by the visitors.

Kildare played the closing five or so minutes with ten men following the sending off of goalkeeper Austin O'Neill for a professional foul on Darren Meenan outside the area.
