Waterford United secured a hugely important 2-1 victory over Longford Town at the RSC tonight, putting a ten point gap between two of the bottom three in the Premier Division of the eircom League.

Despite both sides creating chances, the first half almost ended scoreless. Damien Brennan forced a good save from Dean Delaney while Vinny Sullivan had gone close for the home side.

David Breen got in on the stroke of half time to guide home a header from Shane Harte's cross to put Waterford ahead.

Vinny Sullivan is one of the form strikers in the top flight at the moment and he made it 2-0 just after the hour. Sullivan dived in to head home from Robbie Hedderman's cross.

Dave Mooney slotted home a 77th minute penalty for Longford after a handball had been given in the box.

David Lee almost grabbed a dramatic late equaliser following his late introduction but it wasn't to be for the troubled midlanders.
