Athlone Town are back up to fourth in the First Division of the eircom League after a 2-1 win in their away game with Wexford Youths on Friday night. Athlone were left hanging on somewhat at the end as they finished with nine men.

Paul McTiernan slotted home the opening goal after 27 minutes. The Athlone player finished well after Ian Rossiter sent him clear on goal.

Eric Lavine then made it 2-0 just over ten minutes later as he combined with McTiernan before firing home.

Paul Malone headed a goal back for Wexford just after the hour as Athlone failed to deal with Conor Sinott's free kick.

Davy Byrne was sent off for the visitors on 73 minutes as he picked up his second booking. Athlone lost a second man less than five minutes later as Rossiter saw red after a foul on Sinnott.

Wexford just couldn't force the second goal they needed to level and Athlone bounce back to challenge for the play-off places.
