Galway United secured one of the shock results of the season so far as they left league leaders Saint Patrick's Athletic reeling at Richmond Park tonight. The Tribesmen secured a 2-1 victory to hand the league's top side their second successive league defeat.
Despite being so strong at home this season and going into the game unbeaten at the west Dublin venue, the Saints struggled against a lively Galway attack in the early going.
Derek Glynn had gone close but squeezed a chance just wide midway through the half for the visitors.
A direct Saints move opened the scoring just before the half hour as Gary O'Neill flicked on goalkeeper Barry Ryan's long clearance. Mark Quigley ran in to finish and seemingly give Pats the perfect start.
However, former Claremorris player Glynn was to hit two goals for the second game running to stun the Dublin side. Glynn hit his first of the night on 34 minutes as he ran in on Stephen O'Flynn's through ball before slotting home after outpacing Stephen Brennan and curling home to the back post.
It would be Glynn again to grab what proved to be the winner 15 minutes from the end. He pounced on a loose header from Darragh Maguire before outpacing Stephen's Paisley and Brennan and finishing low across Ryan's goal to make it 2-1.
The result moves Galway all the way up to eighth and ahead of the sides struggling at the bottom.
