Drogheda United 1
Stuart Byrne 24
Longford Town 1
David Mooney 7 pen
Drogheda United dropped more points in disappointing fashion tonight as they played out a 1-1 draw with bottom side Longford Town at United Park. With St. Pats slipping up elsewhere, Drogheda again missed the opportunity to cut the Dublin side's lead by any real margin.
Longford started brightly and having gone close with a couple of efforts, they broke the deadlock after seven minutes. Brian Shelley was ruled to have brought down Dave Mooney just inside the Drogheda penalty area giving the visitors a spot kick.
Mooney himself stood up to take the kick and fired home past Mikko Vilmunen.
Longford indeed felt aggrieved not to have taken a two goal lead when Dave Freeman had a goal chalked off to a controversial offside while Gary Deegan went close with a long range shot deflecting not far over.
Having not added to their lead, Longford were punished on 24 minutes as Stuart Byrne - a former Town player - was given enough time to control Ollie Cahill's cross with his chest before slotting home the equaliser.
Longford didn't fade as expected and kept themselves in the game keeping the league's second placed team on the back foot for spells.
Drogheda improved after the break but still couldn't take the lead. Byrne flicked a header narrowly off target while Cahill missed with a number of good opportunities.
Paul Keegan could and probably should have wrapped up a home win in the dying minutes but missed the target after his initial shot had rebounded back into his path in front of goal.
Longford still have plenty of work to do to even climb up to the play-off place but they will at least be boosted by a good performance against one of the top teams tonight.
