Finn Harps at last showed signs of mounting a promotion challenge in the First Division of the eircom League of Ireland on Friday night. Harps ran out 3-0 winners as they hosted third placed Limerick 37 at Finn Park, handing "37" just their second league loss.
The emphatic win lifts Harps to fifth in the table and to within ten points of Limerick.
Chris Breen, marking what could have been his final game for Harps for some time, opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Shaun Holmes' shot fell into Breen's path before he fired home. The Harps man is set to depart for a year in Australia soon and will be a big loss.
Both sides had chances in an even middle of the game but Harps went 2-0 up on 75 minutes after imposing themselves more as the game went on. Pat Purcell had been penalised for a handball in the box and Conor Gethins slotted home the resulting penalty.
Gethins grabbed a second in stoppage time and on the balance of chances in the closing moments, they deserved a convincing win on the night.
