Athlone Town climbed to fourth in the First Division of the eircom League of Ireland on Saturday night after a 1-0 win over Shelbourne at the Athlone Town Stadium in a game which saw three red cards.
Ronan Frawley headed narrowly wide for Athlone as they started better. Stevie Gavin had a goal ruled out before Paul McTiernan also went close before the break.
A foul by Shelbourne goalkeeper James Hussey on Athlone striker Eric Lavine gave the home side a 50th minute penalty which Ian Rossiter duly dispatched beyond Hussey.
The second half was low on chances but high on incident as three players saw red. Lavine was the first to walk, dismissed after an off the ball incident on the hour.
Shels though finished with just nine men as first Glen Lacey and then Alan Murphy were sent off within moments of one another after the 80th minute.
