Cork City edged past one time intense rivals Shelbourne 1-0 to claim their place in the third round of this season's FAI Cup. Roy O'Donovan's early penalty proved decisive at Tolka Park.

O'Donovan was brought down in the box by Conor Rafferty inside eight minutes and the Irish B international picked himself up to slot home the penalty.

Shels had a couple of chances with Mark Leech firing an early chance straight at Cork keeper Michael Devine while Kieran Harte missed the target from a good position.

Although City didn't add to their early goal, their defence looked solid - particularly in the second half - and Shels rarely looked like getting back into the game.

Shelbourne : Hussey, O'Reilly, Rafferty, McEniff, Harte (Doran 89), Murphy, Chambers, Lacey, Leech, Walsh.
Cork City : Devine, Horgan, Kelly, Murray, Ryan, Woods, Gamble (O'Brien 31), Murphy, Kearney, O'Flynn, O'Donovan.
