Derry City ended a four game run without a win as they eventually saw off the challenge of bottom of the league Monaghan United at the Brandywell. A goal at either end of the game gave the Candystripes a 2-0 win.

It was fortunate indeed for Derry that Paddy McCourt had fired them ahead early in the game. McCourt found a path to the net with his low driven shot through a crowd of players after a fifth minute corner kick.

Despite dominating possession cup holders Derry struggled to kill off the challenge of lowly Monaghan.

McCourt went close but saw the woodwork deny him on the hour mark while Monaghan keeper Alvin Rouse was in good form to frustrate Derry on the night.

Having had a goal disallowed in the early going, former Monaghan player Mark Farren netted seven minutes from the end as he turned home from close range.

Derry won't be too worried by the performance and will just be relieved to have kept alive their hopes of retaining the trophy.
