Monaghan United climbed off the bottom of the eircom League of Ireland and up to seventh in the First Division after a convincing 4-0 win over Shelbourne at Kingspan Century Park on Friday night.

3-0 up, Monaghan had virtually wrapped up an impressive win before half-time against the club who won the League of Ireland last season.

Willie Doyle fired the home side in front after 20 minutes after a loose ball fell kindly for him.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 as Darren Meenan fired home superbly after Doyle's through ball. Robbie Farrell nipped in against a static Shels defence to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.

Meenan wrapped up an emphatic win for the home side when he slotted home his second of the night to make it 4-0 on 82 minutes.
