The night had started well enough for the home side when Ross Cosgrave blasted home a free kick after just four minutes.
Kilkenny punished some wasteful Limerick finishing to make it 1-1 on 35 minutes as Martin Tynan dived in to head home from Andrzej Polenwcak's cross.
The home side were stunned on the stroke of half-time as Ted O'Connor turned the ball home after Michael Comerford sent the ball into the home area.
