Dundalk's fifteen game unbeaten start to the League of Ireland season came to a crashing halt this afternoon as they fell to a late defeat at the hands of second placed Cobh Ramblers. A late Alan Carey goal gave Ramblers the three points they needed to cut Dundalk's lead down to one point.

Carey had earlier failed to convert from the penalty spot but found the net in the dying moments to claim the win.

Cobh had started the game well and looked set to take the lead after Graham Cummins was brought down in the box after half an hour. However, goalkeeper Chris Bennion superbly saved Carey's 33rd minute spot kick.

Dundalk's best effort of the game came shortly before that as Dave Crawley forced a save from a set-piece.

With the game seemingly destined for a stalemate, Cobh grabbed a slightly fortunate winner just into stoppage time.

Carey floated in a long range free kick and under pressure, Bennion missed the ball allowing it to fly past him and into the net.

The result is crucial in this season's promotion race and although it moves Cobh into range of top spot, the entire chasing pack will also be boosted as Dundalk finally tasted a league defeat.
