Kildare County came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win and compact the middle of the League of Ireland First Division table even more tonight. Athlone remain fourth after the loss but sixth placed Kildare now trail them by just one point.

Colin Fortune slotted home a 31st minute penalty as Athlone took a deserved first half lead.

Phillip Gorman played a huge part in Kildare's second half turnaround and he set up Stephen McCrossan's equaliser just after the hour.

Gorman himself grabbed the winner as he stole in on the end of Darren Stapleton's cross and score the Kildare winner on 74 minutes.
