UCD became the first team to clinch a semi-final place in this season's League of Ireland Cup as they overcame Finn Harps at Belfield Park tonight.

Derek Doyle fired UCD in front after 17 minutes when played in on the Harps goal. He kept his head to slot home in the one-on-one.

Conor Gethins had gone close earlier and he went close again shortly after the lead goal before Shaun McGowan missed a header from a good position.

Conor Sammon got in behind a static visiting defence to turn home Conon Byrne's cross to put UCD 2-0 up on the half hour

Irish B international Darren Quigley made a rare start in goal for UCD and was kept busy to keep out Harps.

Tony McDonnell might have put the game beyond the First Division side but headed against the bar in the closing half hour.

Conor Gethins grabbed a lifeline for Harps on 77 minutes when he fired home to the top corner with a stunning strike from long range.

Harps battled hard but couldn't get that vital second goal.
