Shamrock Rovers 1
Andy Myler 81
Athlone Town 0
Veteran striker Andy Myler scored late to send Shamrock Rovers into the last four of this year's League of Ireland Cup. The Hoops overcame Athlone Town 1-0 at Tolka Park on Tuesday night.
Rovers were on top for much of the game but took until the 81st minute to break the deadlock.
Tadhg Purcell and Dave O'Connor both went close in the early going for Rovers but a combination of last gasp defending and poor finishing kept the game scoreless.
Ian Rossiter forced a save from home keeper Stephen O'Brien in probably Athlone's best chance of the game after the break.
Ger Rowe chipped narrowly over at the other end as the game opened up. David Cassidy couldn't direct the ball at goal when David Tyrell's corner kick eluded everyone to reach the back post.
The only goal of the game arrived inside the closing ten minutes when Rowe flicked a ball back into the area as Athlone struggled under a Cassidy cross. Rowe picked out Myler and the former Athlone player nipped in to head home.
