Shamrock Rovers moved up to third in the Premier Division of the eircom League of Ireland and heaped more misery on doomed Longford Town at Flancare Park on Friday night.

Longford had actually started the game decently and former Hoop Dave Mooney forced an early save from former Longford favourite Stephen O'Brien in the visiting goal with a deflected shot. The same Longford player failed to trouble the goal when put through by Pat Sullivan later in the half.

David Tyrell - making his first start for Rovers - slotted the visitors in front just three minutes before the break as he got in on the end of David McGill's cross.

It was so near to being level at the break as Rovers' Barry Ferguson - another ex Longford man - sliced a Mooney shot against his own upright but visitors survived.

Rovers didn't look back in the second half as they ran out easy winners. David Cassidy's pass played in Ger Rowe on the hour and he slotted home with the Longford defence torn apart.

Andy Myler - another ex Longford player - made it 3-0 on 75 minutes. He finished neatly to the net as a disheartened Longford side faded.
