The appointment of John Robertson as new Derry City manager has provoked an immediate response with the Candystripes ending a six game streak in the league without a win on Friday night. Derry ran out 4-1 winners over North West rivals Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell.

The lead goal arrived for an improved looking Derry after 34 minutes when Gareth McGlynn played in Mark Farren and the striker turned the ball home.

Farren was involved in the build up for Derry's second goal on 38 minutes before Killian Brennan fired in a cross and McGlynn netted his third goal in three games.

On the back of three straight league wins Sligo responded before the break as the visitors took full advantage of a slip in the Derry defence. On 39 minutes Matthew Judge fired the ball home after Stephen Manson's cross had caused problems.

Ciaran Martyn marked his return to Irish football after a surprising loan move to Norway with a goal to make it 3-1 on 55 minutes. Martyn fired home superbly after being played in by new signing Sammy Morrow.

Farren netted his second of the night on 77 minutes as he got in on the end of another McGlynn cross to put the icing on the cake and move Derry up to seventh in the table - within one point of Sligo.
