Athlone Town and Kilkenny City played out a 1-1 draw at the Athlone Town stadium as managers Dermot Lennon and Tommy Gaynor took charge of their respective teams for the first time in today's League of Ireland First Division encounter.

Gaynor's Kilkenny had the perfect start when Ted O'Connor lashed them in front after only three minutes.

A foul on Noel McGee midway through the first half gave Athlone the chance to equalise and Ian Rossiter duly dispatched the 24th minute penalty.

Eric Lavine saw a shot flicked against the post by Kilkenny keeper Anthony Fennelly in the closing twenty minutes. The same Athlone player went close with a volley.

Paul McTiernan could have wrapped up a home win right at the end but somehow failed to connect with Lavine's dangerous cross into the box.

Neither side was able to edge in front after that with a draw making no difference to the League of Ireland table.

Athlone Town : O'Leary, Rossiter, Carberry, Frawley, McCarthy, Fortune, Harty (Hardy 90), Byrne, Lavine, McTiernan, McGee (Sherlock 80).
