Shelbourne 2
James Chambers 34
Anthony Flood 67
Athlone Town 0
Tolka Park
Shelbourne's excellent recent run of form continued at Tolka Park tonight as they secured their fourth win in five games to climb ahead of tonight's beaten opponents Athlone Town to fifth in the First Division of the League of Ireland.
Athlone have been off colour of late but Davy Byrne had goalkeeper Tony O'Dowd worried with an early free kick. However, just as Athlone seemed to be imposing themselves, Shelbourne broke and took the lead.
Anthony Flood gained possession before playing a through ball to James Chambers. Chambers took it in his stride before dispatching a powerful drive from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 on 34 minutes.
Eric Lavine narrowly missed O'Dowd's goal as Athlone came close to levelling.
Flood eventually put the game beyond the visitors when he headed home after 67 minutes as the static visiting defence watched on.
That was it as Athlone provided no further response and Shelbourne's revival continues.
