Galway United secured their first competitive home win of 2007 to give their survival hopes a timely boost. To further sweeten the result for Galway, the win came at the expense of Connacht rivals Sligo Rovers at Terryland Park.
Despite a midweek setback which saw them exit the FAI Cup, Sligo went into the game as one of the form teams in the entire League of Ireland.
However, Galway boosted by Monday night's late fightback against Drogheda did well and the lively Daryl Robson almost found the net from long range shortly before half-time. Goalkeeper Richard Brush tipped over to keep the scores level at the break.
Galway weren't to be denied after the break when Galway skipper and former Sligo man Wesley Charles headed in the opening goal on 49 minutes - connecting with Robson's pin point free kick.
Sligo had no response and Galway went 2-0 up on 70 minutes when he finished well after good work from Derek Glynn.
The result sees Galway climb to ninth in the Premier Division table, ahead of both Bray Wanderers and Waterford United.
