Monaghan United climbed into the top half of the League of Ireland First Division following a 1-0 win over Athlone Town on Friday night. Robbie Farrell's 14th minute goal proved decisive.

Farrell was played in by Andrew Cousins and although the strike wasn't perfect, a deflection helped the ball on its way for Farrell's ninth goal of the season.

Athlone felt aggrieved that Eric Lavine's tumble under pressure from Luke Fitzpatrick didn't produce a penalty although Athlone might well have fashioned an equaliser via other routes before half-time.

Athlone struggled to create much as time passed although Ian Rossiter fluffed a great chance as he missed the target from a good position with just over ten minutes remaining.

Monaghan had another let off before the end as Lavine's header just cleared Alvin Rouse's crossbar ensuring Monaghan picked up their fourth win in their last seven league games.

Monaghan United : Rouse, Whelan, Mooney, Fitzpatrick, Williamson, Gannon, Tierney, Cousins, McCartney, Doyle, Farrell.
Athlone Town : Kelly, Rossiter, Frawley, McCartney, Young, Lakatos (Hardy 67), Fortune, Byrne, Carberry (Flynn 75), Lavine, O'Dowd.
