Derry City eventually eased past UCD at the Brandywell to qualify for their third successive League Cup Final and a decider with Bohemians in October.

After a scoreless first half, former UCD player Ciaran Martyn fired Derry into the lead shortly after the break with a stunning long range shot. Worse was to follow for the visitors after the 54th minute opening goal as Alan Mahon saw red for clashing with Killian Brennan on 63 minutes.

Kevin McHugh made it 2-0 just three minutes later as he headed in from Sammy Morrow's cross.

Paddy McCourt put the gloss on the win in the closing ten minutes after running the Students defence ragged before slotting home for a superb goal to make it 3-0.

Recently the League Cup Final has been a one off game played at the venue of one of the two finalists with a draw usually deciding who hosts.

This season, the League Cup winners will not automatically qualify for the Setanta Sports Cup and will face a play-off against the winners of the League of Ireland First Division to determine who qualifies.
