Dundalk 2
Trevor Vaughan 78, 89
Wexford Youths 0
Oriel Park
Referee : Tom Connolly
Trevor Vaughan made a match winning contribution to score twice after coming on as a late substitute into tonight's League of Ireland First Division game. The two goals gave Dundalk a 2-0 win against Wexford Youths at Oriel Park - moving Dundalk back ahead of Finn Harps to second in the table.
Having gone into the game on the back of just one win in seven games, Dundalk struggled to break down the second from bottom visitors.
In fact, Wexford's Conor Sinnott had the first real chance of the game as he forced a save from Chris Bennion. At the other end Robbie Doyle brought a save from goalkeeper Jason Russell before then hammering a shot against the crossbar.
Philip Hughes missed a great chance before half-time but fired over from close range.
Just as it seemed the game was set for a stalemate, Vaughan pounced for the lead goal on 78 minutes. He nipped in to turn the ball home after Russell had failed to collect Paul Smyth's cross.
Vaughan got in for a second one minute from the end as he volleyed home Cathal O'Connor's cross and the veteran might have helped himself to a stunning hat-trick but for an injury time save from Russell.
