Ian Bermingham's first League of Ireland goal gave UCD a 1-0 win over leaders Drogheda United at United Park in a poor Premier Division game tonight. Aiming to open up a ten point lead at the top of the league, Drogheda could only muster one shot on target in the entire game and slipped to their third league defeat of the season.

An early clash of heads between Brian Shortall and Eamon Zayed forced the UCD man off before the tenth minute and forced a reshuffle at the back for the visitors.

Zayed had a couple of half chances including an early shot which was very tame but at least on target - ultimately Drogheda's only on-target shot of the game. He should have done better on the half hour when he fired poorly over after Shane McFaul gifted possession away on the edge of the box.

Just seconds later Conan Byrne forced a great save from Drogheda keeper Dan Connor with a driven free kick at goal. It was the best period of a poor half as both sides created little in a dour forty-five minutes.

The first real action of the second half saw UCD take the lead though Irish under-19 international squad member Bermingham.

Bermingham fired in the only goal on 52 minutes after a Conan Byrne corner kick which caught Drogheda cold. His low drilled shot took a helpful deflection off Zayed to elude goalkeeper Connor.

There was little in the way of a response from the home side and UCD looked the side more likely to score the game's second goal. Byrne dragged a shot past Connor and just wide before Peter Hynes came close to scoring with his first touch.

The on-loan striker headed down into the ground from another Byrne corner kick but Connor just got his finger-tips to tip the bouncing ball over.

A Zayed shot minutes from the end was wild and mis-directed and summed up a dreadful performance by the Drogs who have now collected just two points from their last three games.
