Monaghan United secured a 2-0 win on their visit to face Limerick 37 in the First Division of the League of Ireland on Friday night. The result all but ends Limerick's lingering hopes of promotion.
Robbie Farrell gave Monaghan an eleventh minute lead as he blasted home a shot from an angle inside the Limerick penalty area. Going into the game with just one away win to their name, Monaghan stayed on top.
John Tierney saw his shot clip the Monaghan crossbar in the closing ten minutes of the first half and Wayne Colbert missed the target from a good position just after the break.
Although Limerick kept the pressure on, Monaghan went close when Ian McCloskey fired into the side-netting.
Willie Doyle put the game beyond the home side as he fired home a long range volley fifteen minutes from the end.
However, some of the shine was taken off Monaghan's win when Barry Burke was red-carded six minutes from the end, his second booking ending his night early.
Monaghan move up to sixth following the win while Limerick are nine points adrift of third placed Dundalk.
