A Willie Tyrell own goal and a second half goal from Paul McTiernan gave Athlone Town a 2-0 win on their trip to face Kilkenny City at Buckley Park tonight.
The win leaves Athlone well in the race for sixth place in the second tier and leaves Kilkenny well adrift at the foot of the entire league.
Tyrell diverted into his own net on the stroke of half-time when a rebounding shot came off the woodwork and struck him before crossing the line.
McTiernan headed in the second on 71 minutes to hand Kilkenny a seventh home league defeat this season.
