Wexford Youths and Athlone Town played out a 1-1 draw in their bottom three clash in the First Division of the League of Ireland tonight.

Brian McCarthy gave Athlone the lead on three minutes as he powered home a header from Colm Heffernan's dangerous corner kick.

Wexford struggled to break down an on form Athlone defence and the visitors might well have had a second before half-time but Paul McTiernan was denied by home keeper Jason Russell.

Johnny Flynn-O'Connor poked home an equaliser for Wexford twenty minutes from the end. As Athlone attempted to clear, Gavin Doyle sent the ball back into the box and after eventually finding its way to Flynn-O'Connor, the Wexford player turned home.

Doyle had an effort cleared off the line right before the end as Athlone clung on for the draw, McCarthy called on to boot clear as Wexford threatened to snatch the win in the dying moments.
