Cork City secured the victory they needed to keep alive hopes of a second place finish. Cork ran out 1-0 winners against Shamrock Rovers at Turner's Cross on Friday night with Denis Behan grabbing the only goal.
Behan's goal on 34 minutes gave Cork their fifth win in seven league games. Rovers though slipped to their second consecutive league loss.
A Ger Rowe shot in the early going forced a save from home keeper Michael Devine.
A well worked move created the Cork goal ten minutes before half-time. Joe Gamble and John O'Flynn combined before playing in Liam Kearney who in turn picked out Behan at the back post. Behan headed in for his thirteenth goal of the season.
Rovers' Tadhg Purcell drilled a shot narrowly past Devine's goal in the second half but Rovers couldn't grab the goal that would have salvaged a draw.
Cork now trail Rovers by just goal-difference and have a game in hand - they play UCD at Belfield Park on Monday night.
